Acupuncture: What to Expect at Your First Visit (and Why Tired Parents Love It)

Curious about acupuncture but not sure what actually happens on the table? Here's a calm, honest walkthrough of your first session, from intake to that famous post-needle nap feeling.

Somewhere between the school runs, the night feeds, the desk job, and the mental load, your body started keeping score. Tight shoulders. A jaw that never quite unclenches. Headaches that show up like clockwork. If that sounds familiar, you're exactly who acupuncture was made for, and you don't need to believe anything mystical to benefit from an hour of deep, needle-assisted calm.

We're excited to now offer acupuncture at Dolphin Dive Baby Spa & Wellness, performed by Registered Acupuncturists (R.Ac) regulated by the CTCMPAO, Ontario's regulatory college for acupuncture. Here's everything to know before your first visit.

First, what is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a gentle, time-tested treatment in which very fine, single-use sterile needles are placed at specific points on the body. The needles are dramatically thinner than the ones used for injections; most people feel little more than a light tap, and many doze off mid-session.

In Ontario, acupuncture is a regulated health profession. That means your treatment is performed by a Registered Acupuncturist who has met provincial training and safety standards, follows strict clean-needle protocols, and is accountable to a regulatory college. It also means many extended health insurance plans cover it.

You don't need to be in pain to book acupuncture. Some of our favourite sessions are simply a nervous system reset for people who give everyone else their energy all day.

What acupuncture may help support

Clients book acupuncture for all kinds of reasons. The most common ones we see:

Tension & discomfort

Neck, shoulder, and back tension from desk work, carrying little ones, and everything in between. Acupuncture may help ease tight, overworked muscles and everyday discomfort.

Stress & rest

Many clients describe treatment as one of the deepest states of relaxation they've felt. Sessions may help support stress relief, calmer evenings, and better-quality rest.

Prenatal & postnatal wellness

When appropriate, acupuncture can be adapted to pregnancy and postpartum recovery, making it a natural companion to our prenatal and postnatal massage.

What your first session looks like

  1. Health history & chat

Your acupuncturist reviews your intake form and talks through your concerns, health history, and what you'd like to get out of treatment. No question is too small.

  2. Individualized assessment

Based on your goals, your acupuncturist maps out a treatment plan and explains exactly what they'll do and why, so there are no surprises.

  3. The treatment

You rest comfortably in a quiet, private room while fine, sterile needles are placed. Most people feel a brief tingle, then a wave of heaviness and calm. Needles typically stay in for 20 to 30 minutes.

  4. The afterglow

Needles are removed and safely disposed of, and you'll have a few minutes to come back to earth. Many clients report feeling lighter, looser, and remarkably relaxed for the rest of the day.

How to prepare for your appointment

  • Eat a light meal 1 to 2 hours before your session. Don't arrive on an empty stomach.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that rolls up past the elbows and knees.
  • Skip the pre-visit espresso if you can. You'll settle into the treatment faster.
  • Arrive a few minutes early to complete your intake form and land before you lie down.
  • Plan a soft landing afterward if possible. A rushed school pickup works, but a quiet cup of tea is better.

A quick word on safety

Acupuncture at Dolphin Dive is performed only by Registered Acupuncturists using single-use, sterile needles, and it complements rather than replaces medical care. Please talk to your doctor or midwife first if you:

  • Have a high-risk pregnancy
  • Have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners
  • Have a pacemaker or serious ongoing health condition

Your acupuncturist reviews your full health history before any treatment, and will always refer you onward when that's the right call.

Does insurance cover it?

Very often, yes. Because our acupuncture is performed by Registered Acupuncturists (R.Ac), many extended health plans in Ontario include coverage, and it's typically a separate category from massage therapy, so it may not compete with your massage benefits. We provide insurance-ready receipts for direct submission. Check your individual plan for details.

Give your nervous system an hour off

Book your initial acupuncture assessment and let a Registered Acupuncturist build a treatment around you. Sixty minutes, one quiet room, zero people needing snacks.

Frequently asked questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

The needles are extremely fine, much thinner than injection needles. Most clients feel little to no discomfort, and describe sessions as calming and relaxing. Many people fall asleep on the table.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies by person and concern. Some clients feel a difference after one or two sessions, while others benefit from a short series. Your acupuncturist will suggest a plan at your first visit, and you're never locked into anything.

Can I combine acupuncture with massage or osteopathy?

Absolutely. Many clients alternate or stack services, and since acupuncture, massage therapy, and osteopathy are often separate insurance categories, combining them can make the most of your benefits. Ask us and we'll help you plan it.
