A gentle, evidence-informed look at one of the most misunderstood therapies for little ones, now available in London, Ontario.

If you've ever watched your baby struggle to settle, latch, or sleep, you know that quiet feeling of "something isn't quite right, but I can't name it." For many London, Ontario families, the answer turns out to be something they had never heard of before: cranial osteopathy.

Cranial osteopathy is one of the most gentle, hands-on therapies available for babies. It is also one of the most misunderstood. In this guide we walk through what it actually is, when parents bring their baby in for care, what a session looks like, and what to expect from the work we do at Dolphin Dive Baby Spa & Wellness with Joshua Lloyd, O.M.P., our Osteopathic Manual Practitioner.

What is cranial osteopathy?

Cranial osteopathy is a branch of osteopathic manual therapy that focuses on the head, neck, spine, and pelvis as one connected system. Practitioners use very light touch, often described as "the weight of a small coin," to feel for areas of restriction or tension in a baby's body and gently encourage them to release.

The approach is rooted in a simple idea: when a baby is held tight in one area for too long, in the womb, during birth, or while feeding, it can affect how the rest of the body feels and functions. By restoring ease in those tense areas, the whole system tends to settle.

Cranial osteopathy is not chiropractic. It is not massage. There are no quick adjustments, no clicks, no deep pressure. It is closer to a calm, patient listening with the hands.

How is osteopathy different from massage or chiropractic care?

Parents in London often ask us this, and it is a fair question because the three can look similar from the outside. Here is how we explain it:

Massage Therapy

Works primarily with the muscles and soft tissue. Excellent for relaxation, sleep, digestion, and bonding. Our Baby & Pediatric Massage is performed by Registered Massage Therapists.

Chiropractic

Typically uses joint manipulation to restore movement in the spine and joints. Adjustments are quick and targeted. Not currently offered at Dolphin Dive.

Cranial Osteopathy

Uses very light, sustained touch to assess and release tension across the whole body, with particular attention to the head, neck, and pelvis. No force, popping, or cracking.

All three can be helpful, and many families combine them. Cranial osteopathy is often chosen for newborns and young babies because of how gentle it is.

Why parents bring their baby in: the most common reasons

Most of the babies we see at Dolphin Dive come in for one of the reasons below. None of these are emergencies, and many resolve on their own. But for some babies, focused hands-on care helps things move along more comfortably.

1

Birth-related strain

Whether birth was quick, long, assisted, or by caesarean, it asks a lot of a baby's body. Parents often describe their baby as "uncomfortable," "won't lie flat," or "always turning to one side."

2

Feeding and latching

Babies who struggle to latch on one side, who clamp down hard, or fall asleep quickly at the breast or bottle may have tension in the jaw, neck, or base of the skull.

3

Sleep difficulties

A baby who cannot get comfortable in any position, who startles easily, or who only sleeps when held upright may be holding tension that gentle osteopathic care can ease.

4

Head shape concerns

Flat spots (plagiocephaly) are common with back-sleeping. Osteopathy can address the underlying neck tension that keeps a baby turning to one side.

5

Torticollis

If your baby strongly prefers looking one way, has a tilted head, or fights tummy time on one side, cranial osteopathy can complement stretches your pediatrician has shown you.

6

Reflux & gas

Babies who arch, draw their legs up, or fuss after feeds may have tension through the diaphragm and abdomen. Many parents pair osteopathy with our Baby Hydrotherapy sessions.

7

General fussiness

Sometimes parents just feel their baby "isn't quite themselves" and pediatric checks have come back fine. Osteopathy can be a useful next step.

What happens at your baby's first session?

Your first visit at Dolphin Dive is unhurried. Joshua takes a detailed history of pregnancy, birth, and the early weeks. You will be invited to share what you are noticing as a parent. Nothing is too small to mention.

1
Detailed history Pregnancy, birth, early weeks, feeding, sleep, any concerns you've noticed. Bring notes from your midwife or pediatrician if you have them.
2
Gentle assessment Joshua assesses your baby while you stay beside them throughout. Baby can stay clothed and can be held, fed, or comforted at any point.
3
Treatment in the same visit You leave with both insight and care, not just a referral for "next time." Most sessions last about 30 minutes.
4
Simple things to try at home A feeding position, a way to hold during tummy time, an awareness of how baby rests. No formal "exercises."

Some babies sleep through the whole session. Others stay awake and curious. Both are completely normal.

Is cranial osteopathy safe for babies?

💛
Yes, and your baby is with you the entire time. Cranial osteopathy is one of the gentlest hands-on therapies available. The touch is very light, the techniques are non-invasive, and your baby is fully assessed before any treatment is offered. There is no separation, no pressure, and no forceful movement. Joshua will refer you to your pediatrician or family doctor if anything is outside our scope.

At what age can my baby start?

👶
From a few days old, once you are home from the hospital. Many families come in during the first few weeks for support with feeding, settling, or head shape. Others come in later as new questions come up. There is no age that is "too late" - we also see toddlers and older children.

How many sessions will my baby need?

📅
Most babies need between 2 and 4 sessions. Some come in once or twice and feel resolved. Others, particularly when there has been a long or complicated birth, may benefit from a slightly longer plan. Joshua reviews progress at each visit and never books more than you and your baby actually need.

Frequently asked questions

?Do I need a referral to see an osteopath in Ontario?
No referral is required. You can book your baby directly. If you have shared concerns with your midwife, family doctor, or pediatrician, feel free to bring any notes to your first visit.
?Will my baby cry during the session?
Some babies are completely calm. Others express themselves the way they do at any new experience. You can hold, feed, and comfort your baby throughout. We work at your baby's pace, never against it.
?Is cranial osteopathy covered by insurance?
Many extended health plans in Ontario cover osteopathic manual therapy. Coverage varies by plan, so we recommend checking your benefits before your visit. We provide an insurance receipt at each session.
?What should I bring to my baby's appointment?
Bring anything that helps you and your baby feel comfortable: a change of clothes, a feeding bottle if relevant, a soother, and your usual carrier or wrap. There is a calm space for feeding and changing on site.
?How soon will I see a difference?
Many parents notice subtle changes in the first 24-48 hours: longer sleep stretches, easier feeds, more relaxed body posture. Others see more gradual change over a few sessions. We review progress with you at every visit.
?Can my baby have osteopathy and hydrotherapy in the same week?
Yes. The two work very well together. We often suggest spacing them by a day or two so your baby has time to settle between sessions, but it is not strictly necessary.
