What to expect at your first visit

Your initial appointment gives us time to understand what's going on. Your practitioner takes a detailed health history, assesses how your body is moving, and provides hands-on treatment in the same session, so you leave with both understanding and relief. Together you'll build a treatment plan around your goals.

Follow-up visits continue that care, adapting each time to how your body is responding. For babies and children, a parent or guardian stays beside their child throughout the entire appointment, and all techniques are soft and non-invasive.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before your first osteopathy appointment.

What is osteopathic manual therapy?
Osteopathic manual therapy is a gentle, hands-on, non-invasive approach that works with the whole body, including joints, muscles, connective tissue, and posture, to support its natural ability to move and feel better. Rather than focusing on a single point of pain, an osteopathic practitioner assesses how the whole body is functioning together.
Is osteopathy safe for babies and newborns?
Yes. Osteopathic techniques used with babies are extremely gentle and non-invasive, using only light touch. Parents often seek osteopathic care to support their baby's comfort, feeding, and movement. A parent or guardian remains present throughout the entire appointment.
What can osteopathy help my baby with?
Parents commonly bring their babies for support with torticollis (a head-turning preference), flat spots (plagiocephaly), feeding or latching challenges, general tension or stiffness, and strain related to birth. Your practitioner will assess your baby and discuss what care may help.
Is osteopathy safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Prenatal osteopathy uses gentle techniques chosen specifically for comfort and safety during pregnancy, and positioning is adapted as your pregnancy progresses. It can help ease back and pelvic pain, postural strain, and tension through each trimester.
Do I need a referral to see an osteopath in Ontario?
No. You do not need a physician's referral to book an osteopathic manual therapy appointment. You can book directly online any time.
Is osteopathy covered by insurance in Ontario?
Osteopathy is not covered by OHIP, but many extended health benefit plans and Health Spending Accounts provide coverage for osteopathic manual therapy. Coverage depends on your individual plan and your practitioner's credentials, so it's best to check directly with your insurer. We provide a detailed receipt for your claim.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement and assessment. For babies and children, dress them in comfortable, easy-to-move clothing, and feel free to bring a favourite toy, soother, or feeding items to keep them settled.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies by person and concern. Some clients notice improvement after one or two visits, while others benefit from a short series of treatments. Your practitioner will discuss a recommended plan with you after your first assessment.
