While you wait

A parent or caregiver stays in the building during class. If your child is in the 6:00 group, the women's restorative class starts at 7:15, so you can spend the hour on a mat instead of in the lounge.

If you have never done this before

What actually happens in a class

Kids yoga is not adult yoga made smaller. It runs on stories and games, nobody is scored, and nobody is behind. Every class moves through the same four stages.

1

Move

Big, noisy movement to burn off the school day. Nothing settles until this part is done.

First 10 minutes
2

Play

Poses taught through animals, stories and partner balances.

The main stretch
3

Breathe

Breathing games they can use again before a test or at bedtime.

About 5 minutes
4

Rest

A short guided rest. Longer for the older group, brief for the younger one.

Last 5 minutes

Four poses they will come home talking about

Try them at home. Socks off, nothing else needed.

Tree

One foot on the other leg, hands up. It teaches balance, and falling over is half the fun.

Butterfly

Sitting, soles of the feet together, knees out. Good for hips that spend all day in a chair.

Cat and Cow

On all fours, arching up then dipping down. The first pose almost every child gets right.

Downward Dog

Hands and feet down, hips up. Children are usually better at this one than their parents.

What it helps with, honestly

Research on yoga in schools points somewhere promising: gains in self-regulation, attention and the general mood of a classroom. The studies are small and the evidence is still developing, so anyone selling kids yoga as a treatment is overselling it. What six Wednesdays reliably give you is a child who has moved properly before dinner instead of after it, two or three breathing tools they can reach for on their own, and practice at paying attention on purpose.

Common Questions

Before you register

Choosing a class

What ages are the kids yoga classes for?

The earlier class is for Kindergarten through Grade 3, roughly ages 4 to 9. The later class is for Grade 4 through Grade 6, roughly ages 9 to 12. We group by grade rather than strictly by age so the pace and the attention span match. If your child sits near the boundary, email us and we'll help you pick.

Who teaches the classes?

Melanie Brown, who runs Ladybug and Leaf Wellness here in London and is certified to teach children's yoga through Little Yogis Academy. She teaches all three classes, so the same person is with your child every week.

Money

How much is it in total?

The fall term is $140 plus HST, which comes to $158.20. That is a launch rate for our first session. From the winter term on, it's the regular $150 plus HST, $169.50, which works out to $25 a class. Every class is the same price, whether it's a kids class or the women's restorative class.

Is there a discount for siblings?

There can be. Email us before you register with the names and grades of both children and we'll sort it out for you.

Can we try a single class instead of the full session?

No, registration is for the full six week session. Each week builds on the one before and the group stays the same throughout, which is what makes the class work.

On the day

Do I need to stay during my child's class?

Yes. A parent or caregiver stays in the building for the duration of the class. You're welcome to watch, or to wait in our lounge, and there's plenty going on elsewhere in ActivityPlex. If your child is in the 6:00 class, the women's restorative class starts at 7:15, so you can use the time for yourself.

Who is the women's restorative class for?

Any woman who wants an hour of slow, supported, quiet movement. You do not need to be flexible, fit or experienced. Poses are held for a long time with bolsters and blankets supporting you, so the work is in letting go rather than pushing.

My child has never done yoga. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Most children arrive with no experience. There's no scoring, no performing and nothing to keep up with. Classes are built around play, breathing games and poses children can do at their own pace.

What should we wear and bring?

Comfortable clothes you can move in, bare feet or grip socks, and a water bottle. We provide mats and all props. Please arrive about five minutes early so we can start on time.

If something changes

What happens if we miss a week?

We can't refund or credit individual missed classes. Let us know in advance and, where the fit is appropriate, we'll do our best to fit your child into the other age group's class that week.

Can I cancel after registering?

If you cancel more than seven days before the session starts, you get a full refund. Within seven days we'll credit your spot to the next session. Once a session has begun, registration is non-refundable.

What if the class doesn't fill?

Each class needs five people to run. If we don't reach that, we'll contact you about a week before the start date and refund you in full, or move your spot to the next session, whichever you prefer.

Can I register two children in different age groups?

Yes. Register each child in the class that matches their grade. The two classes run back to back on the same Wednesday evening, so it's one trip. Email us if you'd like help with the timing, and ask about the sibling rate while you're at it.

Where exactly are you and is there parking?

We're at 112 to 1305 Commissioners Road East in London, inside the ActivityPlex building. There's free parking on site.

Ten to twelve spots per class

Groups are kept small on purpose. Our fall term runs at a launch rate of $140, ten dollars off the regular price. Register online in under two minutes.
